What is a gemach? You may well ask and find your answer searching in the heart of Jewish Detroit through racks of designer bridal gowns, bins of baby toys or in a basement turned store room for gently used furniture and household items to borrow and return.
Truly it is amazing how such a simple food as matzah – the “bread of affliction” – holds such a rich and enduring message about the journey of the Jewish people.
Sure, it’s only eight days, but it can feel like a lifetime. What do you eat for lunch if not a sandwich? What do you serve for dinner if not pasta?
2016 marks the 25th anniversary of the Jewish Community Archives, whose holdings now surpass two million documents, 25,000 photographs, and 100 oral history interviews.The celebration includes a “pop-up” exhibit, called Creating a Jewish Community, which kicks off in January and will run throughout 2016, hitting more than thirty locations around Metro Detroit.
