Who’s Lighting that Menorah?

The Festival of Lights has a history of putting people in a festive mood, and the Leonard N. Simons Jewish Community Archives has the photographs to prove it!

The Jewish Community Center’s photograph collection is filled with decades of Hanukkah celebrations – from preschoolers to older adults. But, as much as we love these images, we wish we knew the names of the people who were in them!

Take this image from circa 1950. Are these young adults planning a Hanukkah party? Having their own celebration? Using a menorah as a paperweight? We don’t know, but we are hoping you do!

If you have any information on the photo (names, place, dates), go to the image on our digital database, click “Send Us Feedback” and we will take care of the rest. Please be as specific as possible with your information, it will really help our efforts to tag and describe the images as accurately as possible!

Don’t recognize this image? We could still use your help identifying lots of other Hanukkah photos (and more!) on our database.

From all of us at the Joan Meyers Jampel Center for Michigan Jewish Heritage, have a happy holiday season!

History Help Line is brought to you by the Joan Meyers Jampel Center for Michigan Jewish Heritage, a collaboration between the Rabbi Leo M. Franklin Archives of Temple Beth El and the Leonard N. Simons Jewish Community Archives of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit.
