About The Pitch
What happens when 1,000 people wearing baseball caps come together to play for the city can be truly transformational.
Whether you’re a player or a fan, a causal spectator or MVP volunteer, this is your Pitch For Detroit – CommunityNext’s Third Annual Charity Softball Tournament.
Says co-founder of the event, Adam Blanck, “It’s all about community, meeting up with friends and family, all coming together in celebration of the city we love.” It’s a picnic in the park with hot dogs, burgers on the grill, Slip-n-Slide and activities for the kids, live bands, food vendors. If for nothing else, come for the entertainment. Pitch in. Pinch hit. Pitch For Detroit.
Do It For Detroit
Proceeds from Pitch For Detroit go to The Do It For Detroit (DIFD) Fund – an initiative to identify, empower and mobilize Detroit’s next generation to lead the resurgence and transformation of the city.
Partnered with Repair the World — an organization building a movement to make service a defining element of American Jewish life, learning and leadership — the Do It For Detroit Fund 2012 provides microgrants, ranging from $500 to $3,000, for ideas and initiatives designed to create positive social change in Detroit.
How the grants will be used
“The most valuable resource for the Do It For Detroit Fund is the energy, optimism and creativity of everyone involved,” explains Ben Falik, Manager of Detroit Service Initiatives for Repair The World. “Allocating modest amounts of money through an inclusive process can create new stakeholders and opportunities.”
Additionally, funds will be given back to CommunityNEXT, a division of NEXTGen Detroit, powered by the Jewish Federation, to ensure the ability to partner and fund social action opportunities throughout the 2013-2014 programming year.
The Goal
The Do It For Detroit Fund aims to raise $100,000 not only to provide grants, but also to involve the community in the process of review and selection of worthy projects. Finalists are to pitch their ideas at six events held throughout the year, whereby the community can “vote” on the spot or online to determine which projects will be funded.
The Commitment
What sets the Do It For Detroit Fund apart from other funds is the community component. Local organizations seeking grants, individuals looking to get involved in the community for the first time, “ex-Detroiters” looking to stay connected or prospective new residents of the city looking for opportunity — anyone and everyone can Do It For Detroit.
