Kosher to Go

Got a party or meeting to cater? An occasion for a cookie tray? Or just a yen for a delicious meal as close as it gets to home cooking – without cooking at home?

Easy. Think Kosher to Go.

One of Jewish Detroit’s best kept secrets, Kosher to Go is a service of Jewish Senior Life – a full-service catering company – preparing food in the kitchens of Meer Jewish Apartments in West Bloomfield and Prentis Jewish Apartments in Oak Park. Who better to provide wonderful and healthful kosher meals, from appetizers to dessert, than the culinarians who prepare 900 dinners five days a week for the residents living at JSL?

Kosher to Go is not a new service. “It’s a ‘re-startup’ of the carry-out food service we’ve offered the community for some time,” explains Barbra Giles, Associate Director of Jewish Senior Life. “The big difference now is that we are responsible for dining service ourselves – and no longer utilize an outside food service source. Since May of 2014, under the excellent management of Ron Colasanti our Director of Dining Services, we’ve noticed a significant improvement both in our menu and the quality of our food service.”

Better than ever

With more than 20 years in the food service industry, Colasanti has brought his own culinary flair to Jewish Senior Life, adding new signature entrees to the daily fare, not to mention a frosted brownie residents have described as ‘out of this world.’

Reasonably priced at $13.95 per person, a typical Shabbat meal on the Kosher to Go menu might include a choice of Baked Chicken or Beef Brisket with Couscous, Green Beans Almondine, Tossed Salad, Chicken Noodle Soup, Mini Challah Rolls and Brownies. For large orders, serving 12 or more, Kosher to Go requests 48-hours notice. Otherwise, most orders can be accommodated the same day with pick up at Meer Apartments.

“Considering how limited the options are for kosher dining in the metro Detroit area, we consider Kosher to Go a real asset to the community,” says Colasanti. “We look forward to building our menu, as well as accommodating special requests.”

Catering to every need

Emphasizing that Kosher to Go offers full-service catering, Giles added that Jewish Senior Life not only provides an appealing menu for any occasion, but, also, the wait staff for parties and life cycle events. “We do it all and we deliver as well,” she commented, “from our signature cookie trays for an afternoon meeting to a Bar Mitzvah. Currently, we’re putting the finishing touches on our new Passover menu for prospective customers to place their Passover order in March.”

As they say, “the proof is in the kugel.”

“Beyond the amenities and food quality that we’re offering with our new food service, the best news is that the financial success from Kosher to Go flows back to Jewish Senior Life,” says Giles. “People can feel especially good about their orders knowing that all proceeds from our catering fully support senior services in the community.”

Commenting on a recent experience with Kosher to Go, Lea Luger, Executive Director of Yad Ezra kosher food pantry in Berkley, MI, commented, “I ordered a light supper from Kosher to Go for Yad Ezra’s annual board meeting and was very pleased with Ron and his staff’s attention to detail. He provided a variety of items that tasted wonderful, were plentiful and presented in an attractive way. I definitely would recommend Kosher to Go and look forward to using them again.”
