Is there a way of looking at the world through a Jewish lens?
Do your children bring questions home from Religious School that you can’t answer?
Would you welcome meeting other Jewish parents for coffee and bagels (with free babysitting service) on Sunday mornings?
From the folks who bring you the Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning and PEP (Parent Education Program), Federation’s Alliance for Jewish Education is about to launch Foundations of Jewish Family Living, an exciting new curriculum for parents “learning for two” as role models for young children ages 2 to 9.
This course focuses on the master stories and sacred texts from our tradition and explores the profound messages they impart to everyday family life. Unlike other Jewish parenting classes, Foundations is intended as a springboard for parents to develop a deeper understanding of Jewish core values and a greater participation in Jewish celebrations. Many of the lessons are paired with selections from the PJ Library books that many families already receive in their homes.
A sampling of the topics parents will explore together in the first semester:
Living Beyond the Day-to-Day — Shabbat: Creating holy time out and sacred space
Protecting Our Eden — Protecting our work, teaching our children, the meaning of Tu B’Shvat
Forever Leaving Egypt – Passover, Jewish Identity, Israel and the Diaspora
Bagels and Babysitting, with the Benefit of Learning
“For parents of young children embarking upon their first years in religious school, Foundations is a course of action, offering a practical guide to Jewish concepts as well as a community of other parents who are at a similar stage in their lives,” says Gail Greenberg, Assistant Director of Melton and FedEd. “Parents are engaged in meaningful learning that leads to wonderful conversations with their families.”
Foundations for Jewish Family Living starts in September at participating congregations. The cost per semester – ten Sunday morning sessions – is $50 per person or $75 per couple. Scholarships are available. Free babysitting is provided. Register at jewishdetroit.org/foundations or call 248-205-2557.
